If you want to publish open access, many journals will ask the author to pay an APC, or article processing charge/cost. The Library does not have a general fund to cover article processing costs.

We do have agreements with participating journals to defray costs. Typically, our agreements allow us to reduce around 10% of the cost. A full list of participating journals, along with instructions, are available at our Publishing guide section on article processing charges.

If you are struggling to pay an open access cost, we recommend:

  • Asking the journal for a waiver or discount on the APC
  • Checking with your faculty mentor (if student) or department chair (if staff or faculty) to see if funds are available
  • Looking for a journal that does not charge a fee at the Directory of Open Access Journals
    • Once you search for a journal topic, use the search bar on the right to See Journals ... Without fees
