Question:

24/7 Badge Access Guidelines

Details:

The badging policy at the HSL creates an unnecessary hurdle. I am a CU Resident who attempted to use the HSL on a Friday afternoon to work on a research project after unexpectedly finishing a bit early in clinic. As a Resident, I have been assigned 5 badges, with the CU badge being the one used by far the least. Given the unexpected nature of this trip to the HSL, I did not have my CU badge, but did have my UCHealth badge. I was told that this badge was not acceptable proof of being CU affiliated, despite it saying Resident Physician on it. I gather that it is apparently too difficult to get badge access readers on the same campus to be able to read badges from "separate" institutions like UCHealth and CU. And apparently there is a concern that "anybody could get a UCHealth badge". However, I believe that the judgment and ability of the Library staff can be trusted to look closely at a UCHealth badge and determine if that person needs to be kicked out of the HSL at 5 PM.

Answer:

Thank you for the comment.
I appreciate the inconvenience of being asked to leave the library at closing time. Thank you for your cooperation with library staff and our policy. The 24/7 service provision has proven to be extremely popular with our affiliated users. We ask all users who do not have the proper ID per the policy to leave the library at closing time. While not always perfect, this strict approach helps to assure security of the premises and safety of University personnel staying in the library after closing time. We do not make case-by-case judgments about other organizations’ ID badges. To remain in HSL after-hours, users must have and physically show one of the AMC ID badges listed by the policy (opens in a new window)  While I recognize the inconvenience of this for you, we enforce the rule in good faith consistently for the good and safety of all.
I hope you will continue to use the Health Sciences Library and our resources for your research and clinical needs.  Please contact me if you have further questions or concerns.

Thank you.
